The Northern Lights at Grove Farm

The 10th October was just a normal day and I was on the sofa with Ruby dog at about 8.30pm, after a busy day prepping for some catering work, when I suddenly started spotting people mentioning the Northern Lights on social media. I downloaded the Aurora Watch app, which said there was only a 3% change of seeing the Northern Lights at Grove Farm but I chucked on my dry robe and headed out to the top of the farm to have a look. Disappointingly there was no sigh of them at all but I was quite pleased with this snap I took of Skirrid as it was the first time I'd really used my new phone camera for night photos.

We came back inside a bit disappointed but glad we went for a look! Half an hour later I realised I'd forgotten something in the other kitchen for my catering job so I popped outside again and what a difference! The sky up towards Walterstone Common was starting to light up a very pale pink and green colour but even that was visible by the naked eye. The dry robe went straight back on and into the fields I went, this time to the one where the tents are in the summer. I then spent the most amazing 45 minutes watching as the sky went from these pale pastel colours to bright and vibrant over the Black Mountains. It really was magical!

We did see the Northern Lights whilst on holiday in Iceland in 2018 but this was a completely different experience. In Iceland they were all green and the lights danced around in the sky a lot. Here, there was so much more pink and the changes were gradual as they moved from east to west. I just can't quite believe we are lucky enough to have seen both!!

Did you get to see the Northern Lights where you live?
